Learning to Read
In our approach to teaching reading, we are committed to utilising the science of reading, which is grounded in evidence-based practices that have been proven to be effective in fostering literacy skills. Central to our strategy is the implementation of a systematic and synthetic phonics program. This program emphasises the structured introduction of letter-sound correspondences and their systematic blending to form words, ensuring that students develop a strong foundation in phonemic awareness and decoding skills. Additionally, we pay close attention to the crucial components outlined in Scarborough's Reading Rope model, including language comprehension, word recognition, and the connections between them. By addressing all elements of the Big Six of Reading, we aim to equip our students with the tools necessary to become skilled readers who can confidently navigate and comprehend a wide range of texts, ultimately fostering a lifelong love for reading.
Reading to Learn
Employing rich mentor texts is a powerful way of fostering a global perspective and encouraging students to inquire beyond the boundaries of their classrooms. These texts serve as windows into diverse cultures, perspectives, and experiences, allowing students to explore the world through literature. Teachers play a crucial role in this process by sharing stories and information from various sources, drawing from their own experiences and those of others. By weaving personal narratives and global stories into the curriculum, our teachers help students develop as whole learners. These mentor texts, which include fiction and non-fiction reading material, not only enhance students' literacy skills but also cultivate empathy, cultural awareness, and critical thinking. Our students learn to appreciate different viewpoints, question assumptions, and engage in meaningful dialogue. As a result, they become more open-minded and capable of addressing complex global issues. This approach goes beyond academic learning; it shapes us into informed, compassionate, and socially responsible individuals who are equipped to contribute positively to a diverse and interconnected world.
Writing
Beginning in the junior years, our approach to writing instruction is intricately linked to the research and principles of the science of reading. We understand that as our students develop their foundational writing skills, they simultaneously enhance their reading abilities. To bolster their writing prowess, our students engage with the all the elements and traits of writing, delving into ideas, organisation, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation. We also explicitly teach spelling through the systematic exploration of spelling generalisations and morphology, equipping students with the knowledge to understand how words are structured and how spelling patterns support both accurate writing and reading development. Concurrently, a significant focus is placed on refining fine motor skills and perfecting letter formation, enabling students to not only express their thoughts effectively but also develop the essential physical skills needed for legible handwriting. This holistic approach to writing fosters well-rounded young writers who are well-prepared to excel in both the art of written expression and the intricacies of reading comprehension.

Mathematics
Numeracy education at Benton Junior College is designed to provide our students with a comprehensive and effective learning experience, where all of our students are set up for success. The lesson design allows for students to review and consolidate previous learning through our structured Daily Review and experience explicit instruction of new mathematical concepts before working toward independent mastery.
Lessons are designed so students can use their newly acquired knowledge to make real world connections, transferring fundamental number skills into abstract concepts. All of our students are given the opportunity to develop their fluency and understanding before delving into engaging problem solving experiences. Classrooms are well-equipped with Numeracy scaffolds, allowing all students to access manipulatives to support their understanding and success as a Mathematician.

Inquiry
Our inquiry approach is based on Kath Murdoch's Inquiry Cycle, which emphasises an engaging student-centred process that encourages curiosity, exploration, and reflection. This cycle begins with immersing students in real-world questions, igniting their natural curiosity and fostering a sense of ownership over their learning. We structure our inquiry units to blend teacher-facilitated instruction with student-led discovery, allowing learners to actively contribute to the direction of their inquiries. Teachers support students through the initial stages of questioning and research, imparting them with the knowledge and skills necessary to dive deeper into their investigations. By balancing teacher guidance and student autonomy, we create a learning environment that promotes creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent learning.

In addition to academic content, our inquiry units also focus on the development of personal and social capabilities, as well as ethical, intercultural, and critical and creative thinking skills. Students are encouraged to reflect on their own values, understand diverse perspectives, and approach problems with creativity and innovation. Our holistic approach not only strengthens academic learning but also nurtures students’ growth as responsible, thoughtful, and engaged global citizens. Ultimately, our inquiry approach ensures that our students are equipped with both the knowledge and skills to make meaningful contributions to their communities.
Physical Education
At our primary school, Physical Education is a key priority and an integral part of our community’s commitment to student wellbeing both in and out of school. Our PE program is designed to promote fun, health, and fitness in an inclusive and engaging environment. We believe in nurturing a lifelong love of physical activity by offering students a broad and exciting range of sporting experiences. In addition to developing fundamental movement skills and teamwork, students are given the opportunity to compete in their chosen sports at district level, representing our school with pride. To ensure every child has the chance to explore their potential, we also introduce sports that may not be readily available to all on the weekend, such as lacrosse, hockey, and badminton. This approach helps foster confidence, curiosity, and a sense of achievement in all of our students, regardless of their background or previous sporting experience.
Performing Arts
Our Performing Arts curriculum is a vibrant and essential part of school life, offering students rich opportunities to explore singing, dancing, performing, and musical composition. Through the opportunity for creative expression, students are encouraged to build confidence, think imaginatively, and develop their unique artistic voice. They learn to read music, develop their theatrical skills, and collaborate with peers in a supportive environment that values creativity and performance. They get to experience learning instruments starting with body percussion, recorders, ukulele and African drumming.

There are many opportunities for students to shine, including participation in our whole-school choir, band, school production, and the much-anticipated Arts Week. These events provide valuable platforms for students to showcase their talents. For those with a passion for movement, our lunchtime dance club offers an extra chance to have fun, be active, and perform.

In addition, students have the opportunity to engage in private instrumental lessons during the school day, allowing them to develop their musical abilities further and receive one-on-one or small group instruction tailored to their interests and skill level. This comprehensive approach ensures all students can find their place and flourish in the Performing Arts.
Visual Arts
Our Visual Arts program offers a rich and inspiring journey for students, with opportunities to build on their skills year after year. Each stage of learning allows children to develop greater confidence and creativity as they explore a wide range of media and artistic forms. From painting and drawing to sculpting pottery—fired in our very own school kiln—and designing displays around the school, students are encouraged to express themselves and take pride in their work. They also study a diverse range of artists and techniques, learning how to apply these influences to their own creations. With every project, students are supported to bring their personal creative flair to life, making Visual Arts a truly valued and vibrant part of our curriculum.

Our weekly STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program provides students with hands-on, dynamic learning experiences that foster curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Students develop essential computer and digital technology skills, including coding, digital design, and game development. They explore innovative technologies such as 3D printing, laser cutting, drones, and robotics, engaging with the design process to create and refine their ideas. Our program also brings science to life through real-world applications—students investigate life cycles through active gardening, build and test electrical circuits, and explore key chemistry and physics concepts through fun and meaningful experimentation. These experiences are further deepened and supported by our classroom science inquiry units, ensuring a rich and connected STEM education that inspires a lifelong love of learning and innovation.
Japanese
Our Japanese language program offers students a multi-sensory introduction to foundational language skills while immersing them in the rich and fascinating culture of Japan. Through engaging, hands-on inquiries, students go beyond vocabulary and grammar to experience the everyday life and traditions of Japanese society. From setting up street markets to exploring Japanese currency, designing magazines inspired by traditional art forms and modern pop culture, students are actively involved in creative and meaningful learning. They also discover the world of popular Japanese sports by playing games such as baseball/t-ball and exploring the history and practice of sumo wrestling. A highlight of the program is the culinary journey, where students cook traditional Japanese dishes and learn about dining etiquette, gaining a deeper appreciation for the customs and values of another culture.
