School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

At Benton Junior College, our approach to School Wide Positive Behaviour Support is built on the core values of respect, safety, learning and resilience. These values are embedded in everything we do and guide the way students interact, learn, and grow together. We believe in creating a supportive and inclusive environment where positive choices are recognised and celebrated. Whether it is through our weekly assemblies, classroom rewards, or individual acknowledgements, we make a point of highlighting great learning and respectful behaviour. We provide clear expectations and consistent support to help all students meet their personal and academic goals. By working together, we ensure that every student feels valued, supported, and is able to enjoy their time at school to the fullest.

Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships

As a Victorian Government Primary School, we proudly teach the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships curriculum as a key part of our commitment to student wellbeing and personal development. All staff have undertaken comprehensive professional learning to ensure this program is delivered with care and consistency. The RRRR program introduces students to a range of concepts including emotional literacy, help seeking, problem solving, stress management/coping strategies, consent education and positive relationships. The learning material is age-appropriate and helps to equip students to navigate challenges and thrive both in and outside the classroom. By incorporating these lessons into the curriculum, we equip students with the tools to navigate challenges and thrive both in and outside the classroom.

Zones of Regulation

We use the Zones of Regulation as a consistent, whole-school approach from Foundation to Year 6 to help students understand and manage their emotions. This program empowers students to recognise that all feelings are normal, but we need helpful strategies to regulate our emotions so we can be in the best zone for learning, socialising, and playing at school. Through visual tools, regular classroom discussions, and reflection, students build the language and skills to identify how they’re feeling and how they can make positive choices to manage their emotions effectively. The Zones of Regulation complements both our Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) curriculum and our School-wide Positive Behaviours approach. By working in close partnership with families, we ensure consistent support across school and home, helping all students feel understood, confident, and ready to thrive.

Cybersafety

We partner with The Cyber Safety Project and embed their cyber safety curriculum throughout our wellbeing lessons from Foundation to Year 6.

In today’s increasingly digital world, explicit teaching of cyber safety is essential to support students to navigate online environments with confidence and care. By building these skills from an early age, we empower students to make safe, respectful, and responsible choices when using technology both at school and at home.

Our cyber safety program aligns closely with our broader wellbeing approach, recognising that student safety extends beyond the physical environment into the online space. Through consistent and age-appropriate learning, students develop critical thinking skills to recognise potential risks, understand the impact of their online behaviour on others, and respond appropriately to challenges such as cyberbullying or unsafe interactions.

Importantly, the learning through the Cyber Safety Project curriculum also fosters a sense of responsibility and digital citizenship, encouraging students to contribute positively to online communities. By strengthening students’ knowledge, confidence, and help-seeking behaviours, we aim to ensure all students feel safe, supported, and empowered in both their online and offline worlds

Wellbeing Dog

In 2022, we employed Tully – our wellbeing dog. Tully is a trained therapy dog who supports students in many different ways. Having a wellbeing dog like Tully has many positive benefits across our school. Her calm and friendly presence helps to reduce anxiety and stress, particularly for students who may feel overwhelmed or find school challenging. Spending time with Tully can support emotional regulation, helping students to feel more settled and ready to learn.

Tully also plays an important role in building positive relationships. She can act as a gentle bridge for students who may struggle with social connections, encouraging communication, confidence, and engagement. For some students, reading to Tully or completing tasks alongside her can increase motivation and create a sense of comfort and success in their learning. Tully contributes to a positive school environment for all of our students, staff and the wider school community. Her presence promotes a sense of wellbeing, belonging, and joy within our community, making our school a welcoming and supportive place to be
